Michel Gonet, “Les 3 Terroirs-Blanc de Blancs-Extra Brut”, Champagne 2020

I drank this Champagne for the first time recently with a table full of wine-loving friends—and it was so good I immediately knew we needed it in the shop. From the first sip, it’s all energy and charm: toasted almond and biscuit, bright Meyer lemon, and a whisper of crème fraîche. On the palate, it’s vibrant and textural, buzzing with life yet beautifully composed. Refreshing, mineral-driven, and just decadent enough, it strikes that rare balance between precision and pleasure. This wine is so good, you might need two bottles (we did). 

Drink this with nothing or everything, it's perfect alone but also a versatile food wine. We had alongside fritto misto, burrata salad and wood fire pizza and it was a knock out. It can be fancy, but doesn’t have to be, a serious contender for an ideal Valentine’s Day win. 

Not only is the wine delicious, it has the history and terroir to back it up. The Gonet family has a long history in the region, going back to the 15th century. Currently run by mother-and-daughter team Diane and Sophie Gonet, and Chef de Cave, Antoine Gomérieux. The winery is located in the Côtes du Blanc, south of Épernay, where Chardonnay grown on white chalky soils ripens perfectly, gaining richness while retaining tension and nerve. The 3 Terroirs is a blend from the three areas the family have vineyards  in, Mesnil sur Oger, Montgueux and Vindey. Aged with a minimum of 5 years aging on lees before release and disgorged only when it leaves the estate with low dosage (5 g/l). The result is a Champagne that’s richly textured and gently nutty, layered with citrus, floral notes, golden apple, and a bright, lingering minerality that stays with you long after the last sip.
